The Latest News From Columbia Fiction Foundry Members:
Parul Kapur Hinzen’s novel, Inside the Mirror, was awarded the 2022 AWP Prize for the Novel by the Association of Writers & Writing Programs. Inside the Mirror, which is to be published by the University of Nebraska Press in March, “is an extraordinary and moving story about two twin sisters, Jaya and Kamesh, as they struggle to pursue their passion and independence as women artists from a conservative society,” wrote one of the judges, Brandon Hobson. “Crafted with elegance and precision, and heartrending in its exploration of family drama, this novel is a beautiful and ambitious work of fiction.” Parul was born in Assam, India and raised in Connecticut. Her fiction appears in Ploughshares, Pleiades, Prime Number and elsewhere. She has contributed articles and reviews to The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal Europe, Esquire, Slate, Guernica and The Paris Review, among others. She was a press officer at the United Nations in New York, and worked as a reporter at the city magazine Bombay in India. She holds an MFA from Columbia University and lives in Atlanta with her family.

In self-publishing news, Debra Green’s second novel, Mahjong at Mara’s, will be released by Denouement Press on February 6th. Debra’s novel tells the tale of the bumpy ride to understanding undertaken by the patchwork of people who make up suburban America—the quintessential quagmire of coexistence where neighboring communities of people of multiple ethnicities and financial status converge at the local gas station, supermarket, and café.
Debra is a graduate of Rutgers University and Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. She lives with her husband, David, in Scotch Plains, New Jersey where they raised their three children, Samantha, Zachary and Jessica. The Convention of Wives, her debut novel, was published by She Writes Press in 2022.
